The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has lifted its previous ban on changing candidates’ registered phone numbers and email addresses.
The development, which takes effect from Monday, September 21, 2026, is expected to bring relief to candidates who have lost access to the phone numbers or email accounts linked to their JAMB profiles.
According to a statement issued by JAMB’s Acting Director of Public Affairs and Protocols, Dr Fabian Benjamin, candidates who have lost their registered SIM cards or are unable to recover their email accounts can now update their details through a controlled verification process.
JAMB explained that the process is designed to protect candidates’ profiles against fraud and unauthorised access while allowing genuine candidates to regain access to their accounts.
The Board had previously prohibited SIM swapping and changes to registered email addresses due to security concerns surrounding the alteration of candidates’ credentials.
However, JAMB said improvements in identity authentication and biometric verification systems have strengthened its ability to verify candidates and prompted the review of the policy.
The Board noted that the revised arrangement would particularly assist candidates who have been unable to participate fully in subsequent Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) processes because they no longer had access to their registered telephone numbers or email accounts.
JAMB said the decision was made to ensure that genuine candidates are not unfairly disadvantaged by circumstances beyond their control while maintaining the security and integrity of its records.
