Pastor Adeboye Denies Carrying Placard Against Jonathan

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has dismissed claims that he carried a placard to protest against the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Adeboye made the clarification on Sunday during the church’s November Thanksgiving service, where he addressed a report accusing him of taking part in a protest against the former president.

The cleric criticised the journalist behind the report, accusing the individual of misrepresenting the incident and portraying him as a wicked person because of the placard he carried.

Recounting how he came across the report, Adeboye said he was initially amused by the claim that he had carried a placard against Jonathan.

In his words, “Recently, somebody wrote in the papers, or said somehow, ‘Pastor Adeboye is a very wicked man. After all, we know that not too long ago, he carried a placard against President Goodluck Jonathan.’”

Although he admitted carrying a placard, the RCCG leader insisted that the activity was not a political protest against Jonathan but a prayer walk organised to seek God's intervention.

“True, I carried a placard. I can’t deny that. It was important. It was a prayer walk. We wanted to pray,” he explained.

Adeboye further disclosed that the exercise followed a directive encouraging churches to organise prayer walks around their premises.

His clarification was aimed at correcting what he described as a misleading account of the incident, stressing that the placard activity had a religious purpose rather than being an expression of opposition to the former president.

The cleric's remarks have brought renewed attention to the incident, with Adeboye maintaining that his participation was part of a prayer exercise and should not be interpreted as a political protest against Goodluck Jonathan.
