Prophet Israel Ogundipe aka Israel Genesis, a prominent clergyman based in Lagos, was sentenced to jail for fraud by Justice Olabisi Akinlade of the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja.
Ogundipe, who is the Shepherd-in-Charge of Christ Global Genesis Parish Celestial Church, was arraigned before the court following a petition filed by a UK-based architect, Mrs. Olaide Williams-Oni, who accused him of receiving a total of N17m from her with the intention to help her acquire some landed property.
In her testimony before the court, Williams-Oni told the court that during her visit to Nigeria in 2002, she met the prophet Ogundipe when her step-sister took her to his church for prayers.
The presiding judge found two of the seven charges brought against him guilty by the clergyman, and dismissed the other five for lack of proof.
On each count, the judge sentenced Ogundipe, who was first arraigned in 2007, to one year in jail, but said the prison sentences would run simultaneously.
