"I Started Stealing Babies Because My Own Children Were Stolen Too" Woman Convicted For Stealing Babies Shares Her Mot

Nzube Robert Chukwu, a 23-year-old single mother, has confessed to engaging in the illicit trade of stealing babies and selling them after her own two male children were stolen. She was recently convicted by an Ebonyi State Magistrate's Court for her involvement in child theft in Abakaliki.

Nzube disclosed that she received a share of N40,000.00 for each baby she stole, with her role being the actual theft while a bus driver known as Ofunwa handled the sale of the infants.

The convict attributed her entry into the child stealing business to the disappearance of her own two children in 2021. She claimed that a suitor who had expressed interest in marrying her turned out to be responsible for the abduction of her children.

Once her children were gone, Nzube met Ofunwa, who introduced her to the baby-stealing enterprise. She would hand over the stolen infants to him for sale, and in return, he would give her N40,000 from the proceeds. She was unaware of where he sold the babies or how much he earned.

Nzube's criminal activities came to an end when a baby she had stolen from a friend began crying uncontrollably in public, attracting the attention of neighbors who subsequently apprehended her.

Following her arrest, Nzube was arraigned in a Magistrate's Court in Abakaliki. After pleading guilty and the recovery of the stolen baby, she was sentenced to 36 months in prison by Chief Magistrate Lynda Ogodo on October 16, 2023. Despite the potential 10-year sentence for child stealing, her sentence was reduced to three years due to her guilty plea during the arraignment. The magistrate also warned Nzube to refrain from engaging in further criminal activities.
