"Local Government Chairmen now more Powerful than monarchs" Ooni of Ife reveals

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ojaja II, has highlighted the diminishing powers of traditional rulers and called for a constitutional review to address the imbalance. Represented by the Onifegunwa of Ifegunwa, Oba Adedire Adewole Solomon, the Ooni expressed his concerns during the 8th anniversary of the Nigeria Most Influential Awards in Abuja.

The Ooni emphasized the need for constitutional amendments to rectify the existing situation where local government chairmen hold more power than traditional leaders. He stated that the current constitution undermines the authority of monarchs, making it crucial to revisit and revise the constitutional framework.

In addition to advocating for constitutional changes, the Ooni addressed the N27.5 trillion budget for the 2024 fiscal year presented by President Tinubu. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the government and urged patience, highlighting that positive changes are gradual and require time.

The Onifegunwa described the Ooni as a monarch with a deep commitment to the people's interests, emphasizing the importance of personality over position. He praised the Ooni's simplicity, accessibility, and dedication to grassroots engagement. The Ooni's efforts in supporting the less-privileged, cultural revival, and community development were highlighted as key aspects of his impactful reign.
