Lagos State Government Cracks Down on Teachers' Extra Lessons

The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to teachers who extend school hours for extra lessons, for which they receive payment from students. Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, delivered this message during the commissioning of a new block of classrooms and furniture at Amuwo-Odofin Junior High School Complex.

Alli-Balogun emphasized that the additional hour after official closing time should be dedicated to extra-curricular activities, encouraging students to engage in various social clubs for their holistic development. He expressed disapproval of teachers sacrificing the first lesson for extra lessons, vowing to take decisive action against any teacher found neglecting their duties.

"Teachers must do their job within the allotted time from 8 am to 2 pm, leaving the extra hour for reading or extra-curricular activities. We will no longer tolerate using this time for fee-charging extra lessons. Education is free in Lagos State, and no fees should be charged for anything," stated the Commissioner.
