ASUU Joins Nationwide Strike Led by NLC and TUC Over Minimum Wage Demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has joined the ongoing strike initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), which started on Monday, June 3. The industrial action was launched due to the federal government's failure to meet the unions' demands for a minimum wage increase.

ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke issued a statement to branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators, instructing university lecturers nationwide to join the strike as an affiliate of the congress. The statement emphasized the government's failure to renegotiate the minimum wage and reverse the hike in electricity tariffs.

"Branches are hereby enjoined to join in the strike action as an affiliate member of Congress," the statement read. "Consequently, branch chairpersons are to mobilize all members to participate in the strike action. Yours in the struggle."

This call to action has been met with support from ASUU members, who are now participating in the nationwide industrial action alongside other workers' unions.
