''You were stopped for contravening traffic laws by driving on the BRT lane'' Lagos Police Respond to Actress Laide Bakare's Claims of Harassment

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, has addressed allegations made by Nollywood actress Laide Bakare, who claimed police officers harassed her and drove off with her 14-year-old daughter alone in her car.

In a video posted online, Bakare is seen confronting police officers who had stopped her vehicle in the rain. She questioned why she was being singled out while other cars were allowed to pass.

SP Hundeyin responded to the video on X (formerly Twitter), explaining that Bakare was stopped for driving in the BRT lane, which is reserved for BRT buses and is a traffic violation. According to Hundeyin, Bakare chose to create a scene and refused to stay in her car when it was being taken to the LAMATA office. He stressed that the officers were not going to be deterred by her attempts to delay them.

Hundeyin's exact words were: "You were stopped for contravening traffic laws by driving on the BRT lane. You chose to create a scene. You chose to remain out of your vehicle when it was being taken to LAMATA office. The officers were not going to succumb to your gimmick to hold them down at that spot. You rightly paid the correct fine for your offence - N70,000 - into government coffers. You left with the receipt and your vehicle. Not a finger was laid on you."

Hundeyin clarified that Bakare was fined N70,000 for the violation, paid the fine, and left with a receipt and her vehicle. He confirmed that no physical harm came to Bakare or her daughter during the incident.
