Onyeka Onwenu revealed how she wanted to be buried before her passing.

Onyeka Onwenu, the renowned singer, actress, journalist, author, and politician, passed away on Tuesday night, July 30, at the Reddington Hospital in Lagos after collapsing at Mrs. Stella Okoli's birthday party, where she had performed for the last time.

In light of her death, an opinion piece she published on Premium Times in 2021 has gained renewed attention. In the article, Onwenu detailed her wishes for her burial.

"Do it quickly, quietly, and privately," she wrote, urging her loved ones to mourn but not excessively. She emphasized celebrating her life with prayers, light-hearted moments, and gatherings such as lunch or dinner where jokes and laughter are shared.

Onwenu expressed discomfort with the lavish displays of wealth often seen at Nigerian burials, calling for more modest and meaningful ways to honor the deceased.

Her poignant words, "Celebrate me with prayers, lunch or dinner afterwards. Share some jokes about me and laugh. Make merriment and then go about your business. If my friends want to celebrate me, they should do so while I am alive, so that I can enjoy it with them, not when I am gone and have no idea about this. That is me, Onyeka Onwenu," have resonated deeply with many in the wake of her passing.
