So sad: Islamic singer Rukayat Gawat has passed away.

Popular Nigerian Islamic singer, Rukayat Gawat Oyefeso, has sadly passed away, leaving the Islamic music community in mourning. Known for her captivating voice and deeply spiritual music that resonated with many in the Muslim community, her death was confirmed by Ilorin-based cleric Alfa Aribidesi At-Tawdeeh Islamic Da’awah, who shared the news on his Facebook page Tuesday morning.

Jubril A. Gawat, the deceased's brother and Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, also confirmed the news. In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), Jubril quoted a Quran verse: “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return” (Q 2: V 156). His post has since attracted numerous messages of condolence from followers and colleagues.

The loss has deeply impacted fans and peers, including fellow Islamic singer Alhaja Misturah Aderounmu, popularly known as TeminiSuccess1. On Monday afternoon, before news of Rukayat’s passing became public, Misturah shared a cryptic video on TikTok about the fleeting nature of life. The video, showing her in a somber mood, was captioned, "In the spirit of hustling, may we not be brought home dead." Fans were left puzzled by the post, but by Tuesday morning, as the news of Rukayat’s death spread, the context of her message became clear.

The tragic news has left a significant void in the Islamic music scene, with fans and well-wishers paying tribute to the beloved singer.
