On October 1, 2024, as Nigeria celebrates its 64th Independence Day, veteran actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele voiced her opinion on the ongoing “japa” trend—where many Nigerians are leaving the country for better opportunities abroad.
Taking to her Instagram, Akindele celebrated the nation’s new year, praising Nigerians for their perseverance during these challenging times. Despite the hardships, she expressed her firm belief that Nigeria will rise again, stating that she has no intention of relocating for greener pastures.
Akindele, a multiple award-winning filmmaker and the country's highest-grossing producer, highlighted her achievements in Nigeria. She spoke of empowering young people, producing a movie with a massive crew of 175 members, and the success of her film releases, all made possible within Nigeria. She acknowledged that her success is deeply tied to the opportunities Nigeria provided, and she will not abandon the country in its time of need.
In her Independence Day message, shared on her verified Instagram page, Funke Akindele expressed optimism for Nigeria’s future. “Happy Independence Day to my beloved Nigeria! We’ve weathered storms, but our spirit remains unbroken. I celebrate our resilience, creativity & hope. Envisioning a Nigeria where dreams flourish, talents thrive & opportunities abound. Let’s believe in a brighter tomorrow,” she wrote.
Further showing her commitment to the country, just hours before her post, Akindele reached out to the less privileged by distributing food items to residents in Somolu, Yaba, Mushin, and other parts of Lagos. She announced plans to continue this act of kindness through her movie initiative, Everybody Loves Jenifa, across different local governments in Lagos State.
