"My Dad Wanted Me to Be a Lawyer, but I Refused and Chose to Be an Actress" – Funke Akindele Reflects on Her Rebellious Youth

Award-winning Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has opened up about her rebellious youth and the challenges she faced on her journey to stardom. Speaking in an interview on House 21 TV’s official YouTube channel with musician Falz, she shared how she defied her father’s expectations to pursue her passion for entertainment.

Akindele revealed that her father wanted her to become a lawyer, but she was determined to follow her dreams in the film industry. Despite facing resistance from her family and societal expectations, she persevered and is now one of Nollywood’s most celebrated filmmakers. She credited her mother for supporting her ambitions and inspiring her to succeed.

“I was very rebellious when I was younger; it was my mother who encouraged me to be a successful actress,” she said. Her story has since served as motivation for young creatives struggling with family pressure to pursue conventional careers.

In another revelation, Funke Akindele shared her regrets about rushing into marriage. She advised young people to be careful about hasty marriages, warning that entering hastily often leads to an equally fast exit.

Using her own experience as an example, she admitted that desperation to marry and have children led her into the wrong marriage, which ended in public humiliation. She recalled how she found out about her failed marriage through social media when a friend called her to check the internet.

“I was desperate to get married and have kids, and that desperation made me enter the wrong marriage. I found out it was over when a friend called me to check the internet—I was all over social media, and everyone was talking about my failed marriage,” she disclosed.

Akindele’s candid reflections have sparked discussions online, with many applauding her honesty and using her experience as a lesson for others.
