Prince Akeem Owoade, recently chosen as the new Alaafin of Oyo, has officially announced his royal title. In a formal statement released from the palace on Tuesday, the Alaafin-elect urged the public and the media to address him in the proper manner.
According to the palace statement, his official title is:
"His Imperial Majesty, Iku Baba Yeye, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, Alaafin of Oyo."
The statement also clarified that the Roman numeral “I” (one) after Owoade is not to be confused with the English number one (1). The palace advised everyone to follow this exact format when addressing the new monarch, without adding any prefixes or suffixes.
This announcement comes just days after Prince Akeem Owoade began his 21-day traditional rites, popularly known as "Oro Opebi", which is part of the process of becoming the Alaafin.
The public has been urged to respect the customs and follow the guidelines for proper acknowledgment of the new Alaafin.
