Peter Nwachukwu, Husband of Late Gospel Singer Osinachi, Sentenced to Death by Hanging

The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Wuse Zone 2, has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of the late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging after finding him guilty of causing her death.

Justice Nwosu-Iheme delivered the ruling on Monday, stating that the prosecution had successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. The court found Nwachukwu guilty of culpable homicide and handed him the death penalty on Count 1.

Before the sentencing, Nwachukwu’s lawyer, Reginald Nwali, pleaded for mercy, but the prosecuting counsel, Mrs. Aderonke Imala, urged the court to uphold justice.

Aside from the death sentence, Nwachukwu also received varying prison terms for other charges, including two years imprisonment on several counts, six months on one, and fines of N500,000 and N200,000 for others.

To recall, Osinachi Nwachukwu passed away in April 2022. While initial reports suggested cancer, further investigation and testimonies from family, church members, and neighbours revealed she had been a victim of domestic abuse. This led to Nwachukwu's arrest and arraignment by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (OAGF) on June 3, 2022.

He was charged with 23 offences, including culpable homicide, spousal battery, criminal intimidation, cruelty to children, and other related crimes.
