“I cried when I saw a video of people mocking me for not having a husband,” Funke Akindele reveals.

Popular Nollywood actress and box office queen, Funke Akindele, has opened up about her personal struggles with mental health following online bullying, political backlash, and painful life experiences.

Speaking during a heartfelt interview on Chude Jideonwo’s Live Talk, the award-winning filmmaker admitted that although she is known for her strong personality, she was secretly battling emotional turmoil.

The mother of twins revealed that the death of her mother, the pressure of public life, insults over her failed marriage, and cruel comments on social media deeply affected her. She recounted one moment where a video mocking her for not having a husband left her in tears.

“I watched a video of women dancing and mocking me because I didn’t have a husband. I broke down. I cried and cried. That was when I knew I needed help.”

Funke admitted she had always known the importance of therapy but hesitated due to fear of gossip and judgment. However, when she finally reached out for help, it changed her life.

“I was dying in silence because I was acting strong. When I started therapy, I could finally speak about things I couldn’t even tell my loved ones. And now, I feel better.”

Encouraging others to seek help, Funke urged people not to bottle up emotions but instead speak out and consider therapy.

“If you’re going through anything, please speak up. It’s very important for your healing.”

Her brave confession has sparked emotional reactions online, with many fans praising her vulnerability and strength. Social media users applauded her for being real and for advocating mental wellness, especially in a society where therapy is often stigmatized.
