Veteran Nollywood Actor Yemi Ayebo, a.k.a. Yemi My Lover, Cries Out for Help Over Financial Struggles

Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Yemi Ayebo, popularly known as Yemi My Lover, has publicly appealed for support as he battles financial hardship and seeks to return to stability in the movie industry.

During an emotional interview with Mr. LilGaga on YouTube, the Yoruba movie legend opened up about his current condition, revealing that despite the massive success of his iconic 1993 film Yemi My Lover, he is now broke and struggling to make ends meet.

Yemi blamed piracy and lack of promotional tools at the time for his financial downfall. According to him, the absence of social media in the 1990s limited his ability to properly market his work, leading to illegal distribution of the film and loss of profit. He also alleged that movie marketers turned against him because he chose to handle the marketing himself.

“I wrote and produced the movie in 1993. It went viral across Nigeria, especially among Yoruba speakers. But I didn’t make money from it because 90% of the earnings went to piracy,” he said.

“There was no social media to promote the movie properly. People pirated it, and marketers fought me because I marketed it myself. The movie was illegally distributed, and others made money off it while I lost out.”

“That was the beginning of my challenges. Right now, I’m broke. This industry runs on connections. I need support to rise again.”

Yemi Ayebo appealed to his colleagues in Nollywood and fans at large to help him revive his career and regain stability. His emotional revelation has sparked sympathy across social media, with many calling for industry stakeholders to rally around the once-celebrated actor.
