“It Felt Like a Personal Victory” Veteran Yoruba Actor Abijawara Bi Ekun Recalls First Acting Pay

Renowned Yoruba actor Alhaji Tajudeen Oyewole, popularly known as Abijawara Bi Ekun, has shared an emotional and inspiring story from the early days of his acting journey, offering fans a glimpse into a defining moment of his career.

In a recent interview, the respected veteran recounted how he received his first acting payment at a time when Nigeria had just introduced the 5 naira note. To his surprise, he was paid 50 naira, a huge sum at the time that left him stunned.

“I was shocked to receive such an amount. It felt like a big deal back then, and I was overjoyed,” he said with a warm smile.

Abijawara vividly remembered receiving a cheque bearing the name of a reputable bank, which made him feel it might be a prank or even fake. Suspicious but hopeful, he didn’t cash the cheque immediately. Instead, he folded it carefully and tucked it in his pocket, choosing to keep it safe as filming continued. Since the production crew provided meals on set, there was no urgent need to spend the money.

“I wondered if the money could even buy a car. I didn’t tell anyone, not even my wife,” he admitted.

He eventually waited until he returned to his hometown before cashing the cheque. He described that moment as a personal triumph, one that marked the beginning of his professional life as an actor.

“It felt like a personal victory,” he said, proudly smiling at the memory.

From doubting a small cheque to becoming a household name in Yoruba cinema, Abijawara’s story touched many hearts. His experience not only highlights the humble beginnings of a Nollywood legend but also paints a vivid picture of a time when 50 naira held the weight of dreams, ambition, and hope.

His story continues to inspire both emerging talents and fans alike, serving as a reminder that every great journey starts with a small, unforgettable step.
