"My Friends Spread Rumours That My Husband Used Jazz to Marry Me" – Debbie Shokoya Opens Up on Painful Betrayal by Close Friends

Nollywood actress Debbie Shokoya has opened up about a deep betrayal she experienced at the hands of friends she once trusted, revealing how their actions left her emotionally shattered.

In a candid interview with fellow actress Bimpe Akintunde on her podcast Iriri Mi, Debbie revealed that some of her closest friends spread damaging rumours, claiming her husband had used jazz (spiritual charms) to win her over and that she was hypnotised into marrying him.

“Those I called my people… the same ones who said I was hypnotised—were my friends. People I trusted,” she lamented.

Despite the hurt, Debbie shared that she has since come to terms with the situation and found peace. She described her husband as her best friend, and emphasized that her son, family, and in-laws are now all that matter to her.

Reflecting on the betrayal, Debbie said she now believes God intentionally removed those people from her life to protect her from setbacks and pain.

“Looking back now, I see clearly—God took those people out of my life for a reason. Maybe if they were still here, my life would lack meaning. Maybe they’d have caused me to leave my marriage.”

She added that entering this new year, she made a conscious decision to surrender everything to God, and in return, has found purpose and clarity.

Debbie’s story adds to the growing list of celebrities who have opened up about fake friendships and emotional betrayal, shedding light on the personal struggles many face behind the glamour of fame. Fans have since praised her for her honesty, strength, and faith, expressing support for her continued growth and happiness.
