"Help, But Not at Your Own Detriment" – Actress Biodun Okeowo Reflects on the Burden of Constant Giving

Popular Nollywood actress Biodun Okeowo, also known as Omoborty, has sparked conversation online after sharing a deeply emotional and thought-provoking post about the pressure of constantly helping others.

In a lengthy Instagram post, the actress warned that people who always give without setting boundaries may one day find themselves in need, only to be judged and asked what they did with their money. She stressed that the truth may be bitter, but it must be told.

To illustrate her point, Biodun shared a conversation she recently had with a friend in the entertainment industry. The colleague had reached out to check on her and revealed he stopped opening his Instagram DMs because of the overwhelming number of help requests he receives — over 560 at once. Some of the requests, she said, were so extreme, it was as though he ran a bank.

Biodun admitted she could relate. She often finds herself using money intended for personal needs to solve other people’s problems. She reflected deeply and decided to advise herself — and others — to help when they can, but not at the expense of their own wellbeing.

"If you respond to every touching story, one day you'll become a touching story too," she wrote.

"And sadly, the same people clapping for you today will be the ones dragging you tomorrow, asking what you did with your money."

She called on the government to do more, noting the growing poverty and desperation in Nigeria. Yet, she also acknowledged the difficulty in identifying genuine requests from fraudulent ones.

Omoborty further emphasized that one person cannot help everyone, just as jollof rice never goes round at parties. She reminded people not to guilt-trip others when help doesn’t come, because everyone has their own hidden battles and responsibilities.

“Na as the head big reach, na so the headache dey big,” she added.

“Even some of our children didn’t get a soft landing; they suffered with us. But we pray that their children will meet ease and comfort we never tasted.”

Her message struck a chord with many followers, sparking praise for her honesty and compassion, while also reminding people to balance empathy with self-care.
