Nigerian singer Akande Abolore Adegbola Alexander, popularly known as 9ice, has shocked many with a bold revelation about his spirituality and views on music.
In an interview with Nancy Isime on The Nancy Isime Show, the veteran artist claimed that “the devil controls music and is the choirmaster.” He openly stated that he does not identify as a Christian or Muslim but as an herbalist (Babalawo), adding that he has found his own light through African spirituality.
“Devil controls music. Devil is the choirmaster. I am not Christian, I’m not Muslim, I’m an herbalist. I tell people, and they run away from me. I’m African. That’s what I practice. I have found my own light in my own way,” he said.
Referencing late Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, 9ice noted how Fela’s visits to Ogun (the Yoruba god of iron) were misunderstood by many but deeply tied to his spiritual journey.
The singer also shared his belief that God communicates with people in their own language and culture, emphasizing that Africans have their own divine messages.
“God said, ‘I will never come to you in a different language from your people. You will understand later that this Black continent is for Black people, and we have our own messages,’” he added.
This revelation has since stirred conversations online about faith, culture, and the intersection of spirituality and music.
