"If I Wanted a Third Term, I Know How to Go About It" – Former President Olusegun Obasanjo Reveals

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has dismissed claims that he once pushed for a third term in office before his tenure ended in 2007.

Speaking at the Democracy Dialogue organized by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Accra, Ghana, Obasanjo said no Nigerian, living or dead, can truthfully claim he ever asked for support to extend his time in power.

“I’m not a fool. If I wanted a third term, I know how to go about it. And there is no Nigerian, dead or alive, that would say I called him and told him I wanted a third term,” Obasanjo stated.

He explained that achieving Nigeria’s debt relief during his administration was a much harder task than securing a third term. “If I could get debt relief, which was more difficult than a third term, then if I wanted a third term, I would have got it too,” he said.

The former president also warned leaders against clinging to power, noting that believing one is indispensable is a “sin against God.”
