Popular Nollywood actress Biola Bayo has openly spoken about the growing financial pressure of attending multiple Owambes (parties) and buying asoebi for each one.
In a video shared on her Instagram page, the Yoruba movie star revealed that she has about eight parties to attend before the end of the year, and the total cost of buying asoebi for all could reach ₦2 million.
Biola explained that buying asoebi is just the beginning — she would still need to sew the fabric, do her makeup, buy shoes and a bag, fuel her car, spray money, and even cancel jobs to attend these events.
The actress said she loves celebrating with people, but she can no longer afford the expenses that come with asoebi culture. She stated clearly that from now on, she will wear clothes she already owns if her friends don’t mind.
“Between now and the end of the year, I have like 8 Owambes. The cost of asoebi should be around ₦2 million. I’m sorry, I can’t afford it. If you say it’s strictly by asoebi, that means you’re telling me not to come,” she said.
Biola also pleaded with friends not to take her decision personally, saying:
“Please, nobody should take this personally. If you give me asoebi, I’ll gladly sew it and show up to honour you.”
