Victor Osimhen Opens Up About Lasting Effects of 2021 Facial Injury

In other sports news, Super Eagles and Galatasaray forward Victor Osimhen has revealed the severe, lasting effects of a facial injury he sustained in 2021. In an interview with Turkish outlet Fanatik, the 26-year-old explained why he continues to wear a protective mask four years after the incident.

Osimhen suffered nerve damage from the injury, which severely limits movement on one side of his face and affects basic functions like eating.

“Now, I only eat on the right side of my face. I can’t eat through the other side. The left side doesn’t function properly anymore,” he said.

The injury occurred during a Serie A match in November 2021 after colliding with Milan Škriniar. Osimhen suffered multiple facial fractures, including a broken cheekbone and eye socket, requiring 18 screws and a titanium plate during reconstructive surgery.

Describing the accident, he said:

“A cross came in from the wing. I went up for the header, and he pulled his head back. It wasn’t intentional, but I hit his skull with my chin and the bone shattered everywhere.”

Even after recovery, Osimhen still experiences numbness, occasional pain, and asymmetry when smiling. Eating remains a daily reminder of the injury, as food falls out if he tries to use the left side of his face.
