The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has explained that he did not deliberately ignore or snub the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, during a recent interfaith event in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The incident, which went viral on social media, happened on Monday at an interfaith programme organised by the Oyo State Government at the Grand Space near the Oyo State House of Assembly. Videos from the event had sparked public debate, with many interpreting Oba Ladoja’s actions as disrespectful.
Speaking to journalists, the Olubadan said the situation was misunderstood and that there was no intention to show disrespect to the Alaafin or any other traditional ruler. According to him, his actions were influenced by the circumstances at the venue, not by personal choice.
Oba Ladoja explained that he arrived late at the event and was simply trying to get to his seat without interrupting the programme. He said his designated seat was positioned between the Soun of Ogbomoso and the Alaafin of Oyo, which required him to pass through other attendees. By the time he settled down, some dignitaries had already moved.
He stressed that he did not make any conscious decision to avoid or ignore anyone, adding that the situation was wrongly interpreted, especially on social media.
The monarch also revealed that there had been communication between the two palaces since the incident, dismissing claims of tension or offense. He said he did not see the situation as an insult to anyone and believed no harm was intended.
Oba Ladoja used the opportunity to call for peace and unity in Yorubaland, particularly among the younger generation. He said traditional leaders must work together to raise standards and focus on actions that promote unity and progress in society.
Overall, the Olubadan maintained that the incident was blown out of proportion and urged the public to focus on harmony rather than misunderstanding.
