Kano Hospital Suspends Three Medical Staff After Forgetting Scissors in Patient’s Stomach

The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has suspended three medical personnel at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre following the death of a patient, Aishatu Umar, after a surgical scissors was reportedly left in her stomach during a medical procedure.

Aishatu Umar, a mother of five, visited the hospital for surgery in September 2025. After the procedure, she reportedly began to feel severe discomfort. Following several medical tests and scans, doctors discovered that a pair of surgical scissors had been forgotten inside her stomach. She later died on January 11, 2026.

The incident came to public attention after a family member shared the story online, which sparked widespread outrage and calls for the doctors involved to be punished.

In response to the public outcry, the Kano State Hospitals Management Board issued a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman. The statement said a preliminary investigation ordered by the Executive Secretary of the Board, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, confirmed that surgical scissors were indeed left inside the patient’s body after the procedure.

Following the findings, the Board announced the immediate suspension of three medical personnel directly involved in the case from all clinical duties.

The matter has also been referred to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee for further investigation and possible disciplinary action in line with professional standards and the law.

The Board expressed deep sympathy to the family of the late Aishatu Umar and assured the public that negligence in the healthcare system would not be tolerated in any form.
