A High Court sitting in Akwa Ibom State has sentenced a 33-year-old man, Ndifreke Isaiah Nelson, to death for the murder of his girlfriend, Emem Monday Effanga.
Nelson was convicted on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, after being found guilty on a two-count charge of murder and stealing.
According to court findings, the convict—who worked as an usher in a new generation church in Uyo—killed Effanga, a makeup artist, and stole her mobile phone.
The incident happened around 7am on February 6, 2025, which also marked Nelson’s birthday.
Court records revealed that Nelson visited his girlfriend at her home in Uyo, reportedly to use her phone to post birthday pictures on social media.
However, the situation turned violent when a struggle broke out over the phone. He allegedly slammed her head against a wall and strangled her to death before fleeing with her device.
He was later tracked and arrested on February 8, 2025, at a church on Nsikak Eduok Avenue during a night programme. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime.
Delivering judgment, Justice Ekpo Ntekim found Nelson guilty and sentenced him to death by hanging or lethal injection for murder. The court also ruled that the stealing charge was included in the murder conviction.
The convict was represented pro bono by a legal practitioner from Lagos during the trial.
