2026 World Cup: FIFA to Allow Disposable Water Bottles at Matches After Public Outcry

FIFA has announced a change to its water bottle policy for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, confirming that fans will be allowed to bring one factory-sealed plastic water bottle into stadiums.

The decision comes after criticism from supporters following FIFA’s earlier announcement that refillable water bottles would not be allowed inside match venues.

According to World Cup Chief Operating Officer Heimo Schirgi, spectators attending matches in the United States and Canada will be permitted to carry one soft plastic disposable water bottle of up to 20 ounces (590ml).

FIFA described the announcement as a clarification of its policy, which had generated concerns among fans who feared they would be forced to purchase bottled water inside stadiums.

The controversy began when FIFA updated its stadium code of conduct and stated that refillable water bottles would be prohibited during the tournament.

The football governing body defended the restriction by citing safety concerns, explaining that the measure was intended to reduce risks and protect players, officials, and spectators.

FIFA also noted that several World Cup venues already have similar restrictions on outside bottles and that the organization is applying a consistent safety policy across all tournament stadiums.

The revised rule means fans can now bring one sealed disposable water bottle into venues, although refillable bottles will still not be permitted.

The announcement has been welcomed by many supporters, who had expressed concerns about convenience, hydration, and the potential cost of purchasing water during matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
