Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Calls Out X User for Using an ‘AI-Generated’ Video to Fuel Flooding Reports in Lagos

The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has accused a social media user of using artificial intelligence (AI) to create and spread misleading content about flooding in Lagos State.

The controversy began after a video went viral on X, formerly known as Twitter, with a user claiming it showed severe flooding in a particular area of Lagos. The footage quickly attracted attention online, with many users expressing concern about the situation.

However, Wahab responded to the post and dismissed the video as fake, alleging that it was generated using artificial intelligence and did not accurately represent the flooding situation in the state.

The commissioner criticized the creation and circulation of such content, describing it as irresponsible and harmful to public interest. According to him, government agencies rely on information shared across various platforms to monitor environmental conditions, assess emergencies, and coordinate appropriate responses to incidents across Lagos.

Wahab warned that the deliberate spread of manipulated or AI-generated videos could undermine these efforts and create unnecessary panic among residents. He added that such actions are unfair to people who have genuinely suffered the effects of flooding and are in need of support and assistance.

The commissioner stressed the importance of sharing only verified and accurate information, especially during emergencies and environmental challenges. He urged members of the public to avoid creating or distributing misleading content simply to attract attention, engagement, or social media reactions.

According to him, everyone has a responsibility to ensure that information shared online is truthful and does not mislead the public. He called on residents and social media users to act responsibly and contribute positively to the development and wellbeing of Lagos State.

The incident has sparked discussions online about the growing use of artificial intelligence in creating realistic content and the challenges authorities face in distinguishing genuine reports from digitally manipulated materials.
