The Deputy Governor of Lagos State and the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, has firmly denied reports suggesting he agreed to serve only one term if elected governor.
Speaking during an interview with Punch on Monday, Hamzat dismissed the speculation, stating unequivocally that there is no agreement limiting his tenure to a single four-year term. Responding to questions about the alleged arrangement, he said, “Agreement? No, there’s no agreement.”
Hamzat also shed light on the factors that influenced the selection of his running mate, Damilola Sonayon-James. According to him, the party sought to maintain a religious balance by choosing a Christian deputy since he is a Muslim.
He added that women within the APC strongly advocated for a female deputy after years of male leadership, arguing that it was time for women to take on a more prominent role. The party also considered the need to bring younger voices into governance.
Regional balance also played a key role in the decision. Hamzat explained that, as someone from Lagos East and with the current governor hailing from Lagos Central, the party believed it was appropriate for the deputy governorship slot to go to Lagos West.
He praised Sonayon-James’ track record, noting her previous roles as the APC Deputy Women Leader in Lagos State and a former supervisor in Badagry. Hamzat said her experience, contributions to the party, and leadership qualities ultimately earned her the position as his running mate for the 2027 governorship race.
