The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has uncovered 908 suspected ghost workers across at least 50 federal ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) as part of an ongoing payroll verification exercise.
According to ICPC Chairman Musa Adamu Aliyu (SAN), the investigation identified the Nigeria Police Force alongside five federal ministries and agencies as having the highest number of suspected fake workers on their payrolls. The commission said it has so far recovered about N942 million allegedly paid out as fraudulent salaries.
The ICPC explained that ghost workers are fictitious names illegally inserted into government payrolls to siphon public funds. In some cases, officials allegedly added relatives or associates to payroll records despite them not being legitimate employees.
Aliyu also revealed a shocking case in which a suspect allegedly enrolled his wife, son and mother-in-law as government workers while simultaneously collecting the salaries of 12 legitimate employees. The commission said investigations into the payroll fraud scheme are ongoing as efforts continue to recover stolen public funds and hold those responsible accountable.
