The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has commenced the registration and authentication of SIM-enabled devices operating in Nigeria as part of a new regulatory framework aimed at tackling illegally imported and non-compliant communications equipment.
Under the new initiative, the NCC plans to establish a central registry for SIM-enabled devices operating within the country. Devices brought into Nigeria for sale will be required to undergo registration and meet the commission’s regulatory requirements before they can be legally operated on Nigerian mobile networks.
The commission warned that unregistered devices will not be permitted to connect to Nigerian mobile networks, making compliance an important requirement for manufacturers, importers, distributors and users of affected equipment.
The NCC announced the development in a statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs, Nnenna Ukoha, titled “NCC Strengthens Type Approval Compliance for SIM-Enabled Devices in Nigeria.”
According to the regulator, the move is designed to strengthen compliance with its Type Approval requirements, which ensure that communications devices imported, sold and used in Nigeria meet established technical and regulatory standards.
The NCC explained that it is deploying a technology-driven framework capable of electronically checking whether SIM-enabled devices meet its Type Approval requirements.
At the centre of the initiative is the Device Management System (DMS), which will provide the technological infrastructure for automated monitoring of device compliance.
The commission said the system will also enhance regulatory oversight of Nigeria’s communications device market and help authorities identify equipment that does not meet the required standards.
The new framework is therefore expected to improve the NCC’s ability to monitor SIM-enabled devices, strengthen regulatory compliance and curb the circulation and use of non-compliant communications equipment in Nigeria.
