INEC Reveals States With Highest Number of Registered Voters Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed the states with the highest number of registered voters ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Lagos, Kano and Kaduna occupying the top three positions.


INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed the figures during a stakeholders’ meeting and press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, while providing an update on the country’s national voters’ register.


According to the electoral body, Nigeria’s voters’ register now contains more than 103 million registered voters following the completion of the commission’s three-phase Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise and subsequent biometric verification and clean-up.


Lagos State currently has the highest number of registered voters, with 7,488,633, followed by Kano State with 6,570,276 and Kaduna State with 4,662,640.


Amupitan listed the top 10 states by registered voters as follows:


Lagos – 7,488,633

Kano – 6,570,276

Kaduna – 4,662,640

Katsina – 3,876,051

Rivers – 3,736,434

Oyo – 3,588,111

Delta – 3,525,988

Benue – 3,057,225

Ogun – 3,037,981

Bauchi – 3,012,547


The INEC chairman explained that the three-phase CVR exercise recorded 10,772,421 new registrations before the commission carried out the final biometric verification and clean-up of the voters’ register.


Meanwhile, INEC has announced that nationwide collection of newly issued Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) is scheduled to begin on October 9, 2026.


At the lower end of the voters’ register is Ekiti State, with 1,055,708 registered voters, while Bayelsa State has 1,200,691 registered voters.


The latest figures provide an updated picture of voter distribution across Nigeria as political parties and prospective candidates prepare for the 2027 general elections.
