The Lagos State Government has announced a traffic diversion on Independence Bridge as the Federal Ministry of Works begins asphalt repairs on the bridge.
The repair work is scheduled to begin on the night of Friday, October 16, 2026, and continue through Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18, 2026.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun, said the repairs would affect both the inbound and outbound lanes of the bridge.
According to the government, the bridge will be partially closed during the repair exercise, with only one lane available at a time to allow motorists to continue their journeys.
The government explained that traffic management measures would be put in place to reduce inconvenience and ensure that vehicles can still access their destinations while the work is ongoing.
“The Lagos State Government wishes to inform the public that traffic will be diverted on the Independence Bridge in Lagos Island as the Federal Ministry of Works commences urgent repairs of the bridge,” the statement read.
The state government urged motorists to plan their journeys ahead of time and consider alternative routes to avoid unnecessary delays during the three-day repair exercise.
It also advised road users to allow extra time for their journeys and cooperate with traffic officials managing the diversion.
The repair work is aimed at addressing the condition of the bridge’s asphalt surface. Motorists travelling through Lagos Island are therefore encouraged to stay informed about traffic arrangements and make necessary adjustments to their movement during the period.
