Mohbad’s Family Seeks Postponement of Liam’s DNA Test, Raises Concerns Over US Laboratory

The family of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has called for the postponement of the DNA test scheduled for his son, Liam, following concerns over the proposed arrangements for the examination.

The family head, Samuel Aloba, made the request in a statement issued on Friday, questioning the plan to transport the collected specimens from Lagos to an unidentified laboratory in the United States.

According to the family, there is a need for clarification on whether the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre will carry out the analysis itself or simply collect and send the samples abroad.

The Aloba family is also demanding the identity and address of the proposed US laboratory, alongside details of its accreditation, technical capabilities and the experts responsible for handling the specimens.

In addition, the family wants proper documentation of the entire process, including the collection, labelling, preservation, transportation and examination of the samples. It said these measures are necessary to guard against possible contamination, substitution or mishandling.

In its statement, the family said, “The Aloba family respectfully calls for the postponement of the DNA examination scheduled for 31 October, 2026, pending adequate clarification of the outstanding concerns.”

The family, however, clarified that it was not accusing anyone of manipulating the process or claiming that the proposed examination had already been compromised.

“The family is not presenting the possibility of manipulation as a fact, nor is it asserting that the proposed examination has already been compromised,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court has adjourned the matter until November 16 and appointed a new officer to address concerns surrounding the DNA testing arrangements.

The latest development comes amid the prolonged disagreement between Mohbad’s family and his widow, Omowunmi, over the paternity of their son, Liam.

In an interview with Channels Television, Omowunmi spoke about her strained relationship with her father-in-law, Samuel Aloba, revealing that they were once very close and described themselves as best friends.

However, she said their relationship had deteriorated to the point where she believed the disagreement could no longer be resolved. She also alleged that her father-in-law wanted the DNA result to be negative so he could claim her late husband's property.

Earlier, a court had selected three facilities to conduct the DNA examination, including two in the United Kingdom and one in the United States. Reports indicated that one facility was nominated by Mohbad’s father, another by Wunmi, while the third was independently selected by the court.

The demand for a DNA test dates back to 2023, following Mohbad’s death, when questions about Liam’s paternity began circulating publicly. The late singer’s father also called for the test, insisting that establishing the child's paternity was important.

In September 2025, an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court ordered that a DNA test be conducted on Liam after an application by Mohbad’s father. His counsel argued that determining paternity was necessary because of its implications for the child's welfare and maintenance.

Wunmi, through her lawyer, did not oppose the application, and the court granted the request.

The dispute later escalated when Mohbad’s family announced that Wunmi should not use the Aloba family surname in public or official records until Liam’s paternity was legally established. The family also maintained that no statutory or customary marriage had been contracted between the late singer and Wunmi.

Reacting to the directive, Wunmi’s lawyer, Kabir Akingbolu, described it as illegal and sentimental. He also accused the Aloba family of frustrating the DNA process despite previous court orders.

Wunmi has also taken legal steps to protect Mohbad’s estate and prevent unauthorised claims to his properties.

In a separate recorded statement, Samuel Aloba explained his reasons for demanding a DNA test. He denied that a traditional wedding had taken place between Mohbad and Wunmi and claimed that his son had initially promised to formalise the marriage but later withdrew after allegedly accusing her of infidelity.

The latest request for a postponement adds another development to the long-running dispute, with the DNA examination remaining a key issue in the disagreement between Mohbad’s widow and his family.
