The presidential campaign convoy of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, has reportedly come under attack in Kebbi State during campaign activities on Thursday.
According to reports from the campaign team, the incident occurred as the convoy moved through the state for its scheduled political engagements. Hoodlums suspected to be political thugs reportedly blocked the convoy, pelted vehicles with stones and attacked members of the media crew covering the campaign.
The attack reportedly left several pieces of equipment belonging to the camera and video crew damaged, disrupting their ability to continue providing live coverage of the campaign activities.
In a statement, the ADC campaign team disclosed that cameras, video equipment, tripods and other working tools were smashed during the incident, leaving members of the media crew unable to carry out their duties.
“Most of the gadgets belonging to the camera and video crew were destroyed in the attack. Cameras, video equipment, tripods and other working tools were smashed, leaving the crew unable to continue live coverage of the campaign,” the campaign team said.
The team described the attackers as allegedly sponsored thugs and claimed that the incident was deliberately organised to intimidate supporters and prevent the media from reporting the campaign activities.
A member of the campaign team further alleged that the attackers were not interested in stealing valuables but specifically targeted the media crew and their equipment.
“The thugs did not come to steal. They came to destroy. They targeted our cameras and video crew because they did not want Nigerians to see what is happening here in Kebbi,” the campaign team member said.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of political supporters, journalists and campaign workers during election-related activities.
The ADC campaign team maintained that the destruction of media equipment was intended to disrupt its campaign coverage and restrict the flow of information about its activities in Kebbi State.
However, the information provided does not include an official response from security agencies or the authorities in Kebbi State regarding the reported attack.
