Lola Idije Speaks Out Over Being Typecast as Wicked Mother-in-Law in Nollywood Movies

Veteran Nollywood actress Toyin Afolayan, popularly known as Lola Idije, has expressed her frustration over repeatedly being cast in roles that portray her as a wicked mother-in-law or troublemaker in Yoruba movies.

The actress, who has become widely recognised for her dramatic performances and roles involving arguments and conflicts, disclosed that she has previously complained to movie directors and crew members about the pattern.

Speaking during an interview on African A-List, Lola Idije questioned why filmmakers continued to associate her with troublesome characters instead of giving her opportunities to play more gentle and loving roles.

According to the veteran actress, she would love to feature in movies where she plays a nice and caring mother rather than constantly shouting and creating trouble on screen.

She explained that she had repeatedly raised the issue with industry professionals, asking what she had done to deserve being given similar roles in different productions.

In her words:

“Directors and crew members watching this programme know that I have complained about this. I ask them, ‘What have I done?’ You don’t give me good roles where I am a nice mother; why must I always be shouting?”

Lola Idije’s comments highlight the issue of typecasting in the Nigerian movie industry, where actors are sometimes repeatedly assigned similar characters because of the roles they are known for.

Despite her popularity for playing strong and controversial characters, the actress appears interested in exploring a different side of her acting abilities and showing audiences that she can also convincingly portray a loving and gentle mother.

Her remarks have brought attention to the expectations placed on actors based on their established screen personalities and the need for filmmakers to give performers opportunities to explore different roles.
