Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has defended the Federal Government’s approval of a monthly N70,000 transport allowance for workers, describing the intervention as evidence that President Bola Tinubu cares about Nigerian workers.
Oshiomhole made the statement during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, where he spoke in support of the Tinubu administration and urged Nigerians to appreciate its policies.
According to the former Edo State governor, the additional N70,000 would represent a 100 per cent increase for a worker who previously earned a monthly salary of N70,000.
He argued that the amount could make a significant difference to low-income earners, particularly those who understand the value of N10,000 to ordinary Nigerians.
In his words, “I think this government is doing well. If a man who was on N70,000 now is given N70,000 addition that makes it N140,000 for him, it’s a hundred per cent increase. And if you know what N10,000 means for the real masses, you’ll appreciate that Tinubu has shown that he cares.”
The Federal Government approved the monthly N70,000 transport intervention for workers across all levels for six months, beginning in November 2026. The decision followed a meeting with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on October 27.
The agreement also includes the payment of outstanding peculiar allowances in three equal monthly instalments, starting in November.
However, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) rejected the transport allowance, arguing that workers need a permanent salary increase rather than temporary financial relief.
The disagreement highlights differing positions among labour groups over the Federal Government’s intervention, with Oshiomhole defending the policy as meaningful support for workers while the TUC maintains that a lasting improvement in workers’ earnings is necessary.
