Tragedy struck in Igede-Ekiti, Ekiti State, as a one-story building, which had stood for decades, collapsed at 2 a.m. on October 31, 2023. The incident resulted in the unfortunate death of a 13-year-old girl, while four others, including her parents and two siblings, sustained injuries. They were promptly rushed to the hospital by concerned neighbors.
Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and described the event as devastating and agonizing. During his visit to the site of the building collapse, he urged occupants of dilapidated buildings across the state to relocate to ensure their safety.
The Governor, represented by his Deputy, Mrs. Monisade Afuye, also visited Adeyinka Adebayo General Hospital to show sympathy and wish the victims a speedy recovery. He assured that the government would cover the medical bills of the victims and provide an alternative habitable residence for the affected family.
To prevent similar incidents in the state, Governor Oyebanji announced plans for the Ministry of Physical and Urban Planning to enforce laws that would dislodge residents from dangerously inhabitable buildings, ensuring strict compliance with existing regulations governing building habitation. This proactive measure aims to prevent the recurrence of such tragedies in the future.
