Nollywood star Yemi Solade has addressed the criticism he faced after a video of him in a close interaction with his colleague, Sanusi Izihaq, popularly known as Apa, went viral. The clip, shared by actor Rotimi Salami a day earlier, was a scene from Salami's new movie 5 Alive. In the video, Yemi Solade is seen cuddling Apa, planting a kiss on his cheek, and holding him in a tight embrace.
The scene sparked outrage among viewers, with many accusing the actors of promoting gay narratives in Nollywood. Social media users expressed their displeasure, with one troll openly questioning Yemi Solade’s mental health, commenting in Yoruba, “Mo sorry, but ara yin o ya” (I’m sorry, but you’re not well).
In response, Yemi Solade hit back at the troll with a harsh retort in Yoruba, insulting the troll’s father and sarcastically wishing him the same. He wrote, “Ori Baba e to wa ni Ogba were lo ri ba wi,” which translates to, “Your father, who is in a psychiatric hospital, must have taught you to speak like this.”
The backlash highlights the sensitivity surrounding portrayals of LGBTQ+ themes in Nollywood and the polarized reactions from audiences. Yemi Solade’s fiery response has further fueled discussions on social media.
