"I Didn’t Choose to Be Queen Mother" – Tayo Sobola Shares the Mysterious Story Behind Her Coronation as Sarauniya of Uke Kingdom

Nollywood actress Tayo Sobola, popularly known as Sotayo, has revealed the unexpected events that led to her being crowned the Sarauniya (Queen Mother) of Uke Kingdom in Nasarawa State.

In an interview with The Nation, Sobola recounted how a simple charity visit turned into a life-changing moment. She explained that she was invited to Uke by an acquaintance who visited her shop in Abuja. Without knowing the significance of the visit, she agreed to join the mission, casually selecting an outfit from her collection before heading to Nasarawa.

Upon arriving at the Emir’s palace, Sobola and her team waited for the Emir’s appearance. While seated, she noticed a serious discussion between her companion and another man but paid little attention. To her surprise, when the Emir emerged, he invited her to sit beside him.

As the palace filled with murmurs in a language she didn’t understand, the Emir made an unexpected declaration—she would not leave until she was crowned Sarauniya.

Confused by the turn of events, Sobola sought clarification. She later learned that the seat she unknowingly occupied belonged to the former Sarauniya, and for years, the kingdom had been waiting for a stranger to sit there. Whenever a visitor entered, the palace soothsayer would consult the spirits to determine if they were the chosen successor. That day, the divine selection fell on her.

Sotayo on Cinema Movies and YouTube

Speaking on her career, Sobola admitted that she is currently not producing cinema movies, citing financial constraints. She emphasized that while cinemas set industry standards, not everyone can afford movie tickets, making YouTube a more accessible platform for the masses.

"I want to feed the eyes of those who cannot afford to go to the cinema because I am for the masses," she stated. However, she remains open to both platforms in the future.

On the Recreation of Classic Movies

When asked about the trend of Nollywood filmmakers recreating old classics, Sobola expressed her reservations.

"If the original movie wasn’t great, nobody would think of recreating it. The old ones will always be better than whatever anybody is trying to remake," she said.

Regarding the possibility of remaking her hit movie Arewa Onijogbon, she admitted that while fans have requested it, she has no plans to do so, stating that she prefers focusing on profitable projects rather than unnecessary risks.
