"My Husband Stopped Me from Acting" – Actress Deborah Ewedafe Reveals Why She Quit Acting

Renowned Nollywood actress, producer, and director Deborah Ewedafe has shared the challenges she faced in the early stages of her career, including how she once abandoned acting due to her father’s objections.

In an exclusive interview on Kunle Afod’s official YouTube channel, Ewedafe revealed that her father, a pastor, was strongly against her pursuing a career in Nollywood. According to her, he held negative perceptions about the industry, believing that many actresses were associated with immoral behavior.

Despite her deep passion for acting, Ewedafe respected her father’s wishes and stepped away from the film industry for several years. However, her love for entertainment never faded. She eventually relocated to Europe, where she found a way to stay connected to Nollywood by facilitating collaborations between Nigerian actors and European movie productions.

Her efforts played a crucial role in bringing Nollywood stars to Europe, strengthening industry ties, and contributing to successful film projects. In 2019, Ewedafe made a full comeback to Nollywood, this time as a producer. Since then, she has produced several films and established herself as a respected filmmaker.

Reflecting on her journey, she said, “I joined the entertainment industry in 1990. My father was a pastor and didn’t want me to act because he believed most actresses were promiscuous. So, I stopped to obey my parents. After some years, I moved to Europe, where I rekindled my interest in entertainment. I started inviting Nollywood stars to Europe for movie productions and to build strong working relationships. In 2019, I fully ventured into Nollywood and have since produced several movies.”

Her story has resonated with many, inspiring aspiring actors to pursue their dreams while maintaining respect for family values.
