Tragic Loss: 21-Year-Old Federal University Gusau Student Dies in Captivity Four Months After Abduction

A 21-year-old student of the Federal University Gusau, Zamfara State, Zarah Abubakar Shehu, has tragically died in captivity, four months after she was kidnapped alongside her two siblings.

Zarah, a 300-level student, was abducted from her home in the Damba area of Gusau in the early hours of Sunday, November 3, 2024, by armed bandits. Her captors initially demanded a ransom of N35 million but later settled for N10 million after negotiations.

Despite receiving the ransom, the kidnappers refused to release Zarah, insisting on additional demands, including four motorcycles (Boza) and four cartons of engine oil. After months of desperate efforts by her family to meet these demands, the kidnappers’ leader was informed that the items had been secured. However, in a heartbreaking turn of events, the abductors revealed that Zarah had already died and had been buried two days earlier.

The tragic news has devastated her family, especially her mother, as Zarah was her only daughter. The incident has once again raised concerns about the worsening security situation in Zamfara State and the increasing cases of abduction in the region.
