June 12: Nigerians Protest Nationwide, Demand Good Governance and End to Economic Hardship (Photos)

On June 12, Nigeria's Democracy Day, hundreds of citizens took to the streets in major cities to protest against bad governance and the rising economic hardship in the country.

The protests, which were led by civil society groups and pro-democracy activists, took place in different parts of the country, including Lagos and Akure, the capital of Ondo State.

In Lagos, demonstrators gathered under the popular Ikeja Underbridge, holding banners and placards with bold messages demanding accountability, better leadership, and relief from economic suffering. The protest was heavily monitored by security forces, with several officers from the Nigeria Police Force’s Area F Division deployed early Thursday morning to the scene.

In Akure, similar scenes unfolded as protesters voiced their frustrations over the cost of living, poor governance, and lack of political will to address citizens’ concerns.

One of the leading organisers of the protest, the Take It Back Movement, shared several videos from the various protest grounds on social media, drawing public attention to the demonstrations and the messages being shared.

The peaceful protest reflects growing public anger as Nigerians continue to face rising inflation, unemployment, and insecurity under current leadership. Many citizens are calling for urgent reforms and meaningful action from the government to improve the standard of living.
