On Monday, March 23, 2026, the Nigerian Police arrested Tajudeen Baruwa after he led members of his faction to seize control of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) national secretariat in Abuja.
The arrest came hours after Baruwa and his supporters stormed the union headquarters, attempting to take control from the faction headed by Musiliu Akinsanya (MC Oluomo). Reports indicated that Baruwa’s group had gained access to the secretariat in the early hours of Monday, marking a dramatic escalation in the ongoing dispute.
The factions led by Baruwa and MC Oluomo have been engaged in a leadership tussle since 2024. In November 2024, members of the union elected MC Oluomo as National President, but a subsequent court ruling favoured Baruwa, further intensifying the conflict and leading to the latest takeover attempt.
This incident highlights the persistent internal struggles within the NURTW and the challenges in resolving leadership disputes in the union.
