The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The endorsement was announced on Monday after a closed-door meeting held at Lagos House, Marina, where key political stakeholders gathered.
During the meeting, Hamzat formally declared his intention to contest for the governorship position before members of the State Executive Council and party leaders.
Also in attendance were members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, including Musiliu Obanikoro and Ganiyu Solomon, among others.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the endorsement as a unanimous decision by stakeholders present. He praised Hamzat as capable and well-prepared to lead the state.
In his words:
“We all agreed that the Deputy Governor is fit and ready for the job. He understands the system and has the experience needed.”
Sanwo-Olu also highlighted Hamzat’s performance over the past seven years, noting his integrity, loyalty, and commitment as key qualities that make him suitable for the role.
The development marks an early political move ahead of the 2027 Lagos governorship race, as discussions begin to shape the future leadership of the state.
