Afrobeats superstar Davido has shared the personal story behind his globally recognised stage name.
According to the singer, the name “Davido” was not created for music or branding but came from his childhood at home. He explained that as a young boy, he was quite stubborn, which made it difficult for his father, Adedeji Adeleke, to get his attention.
To call him more effectively, his father would raise his voice and stretch his name, shouting “David-o! Davido-o!” whenever he needed to correct or summon him.
In his words:
“My dad gave me the name Davido. I was very stubborn as a kid, so whenever he wanted to call me, he’d shout ‘Davido-o!’ That’s how the name stuck.”
He explained that what started as a simple family nickname gradually became part of his identity as he grew older.
When he later entered the music industry, the name naturally followed him, eventually becoming a powerful brand recognised around the world.
Today, “Davido” stands as one of the biggest names in Afrobeats, but its origin remains rooted in simple family moments and a father’s unique way of calling his son.
