Human rights activist and political commentator Omoyele Sowore has voiced strong opposition to reports suggesting that Turkey may establish a military base in Nigeria.
Reacting to the development, Sowore warned that Nigeria should not allow any foreign country to set up a military presence on its soil. He argued that such a move could affect the nation’s sovereignty and independence.
In his statement, he called on Nigerians to resist any attempt by foreign entities to establish military bases in the country, stressing the need for national control over security matters.
“It’s terrible that a country like Turkey is coming to establish a military base in Nigeria. We should resist any form of foreign entity coming to Nigeria to establish a base,” he said.
Sowore also emphasised the importance of self-reliance, stating that Nigeria must focus on strengthening its own defence system instead of depending on foreign powers.
His comments have sparked mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians supporting his stance on national sovereignty, while others highlighted the potential benefits of international military cooperation.
