“I Used to Mock Men with Many Wives” – Ooni of Ife

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has openly shared a personal reflection about his life as a polygamist, admitting that he sometimes feels shy when he thinks about the number of wives he now has.

According to the monarch, there was a time in his younger years when he strongly criticised men who had multiple wives. He said he often wondered how they were able to manage their homes and relationships.

However, speaking candidly, the traditional ruler admitted that life has now placed him in the same situation he once judged.

He said:

“I am always shy with the numerous wives I have because when I was younger, I used to abuse people with many wives and wonder how they cope, but see me doing same today.”

The Ooni, who is one of Nigeria’s most influential traditional rulers, has often spoken about culture, leadership, and family life, offering insights into his role and personal experiences within the Yoruba tradition.
