The Rivers State Police Command has arrested and detained several officers accused of extorting motorists in a viral video circulating on social media.
The incident reportedly involved officers attached to the Old GRA Police Station in Rivers State. They were accused of stopping motorists, especially those with tinted windows, and demanding money despite them having valid permits.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Kaborlo, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, the command confirmed the arrest of ASP Omomefe Akin Geoffrey and other officers linked to the allegations.
According to the statement, the Commissioner ordered their immediate arrest and detention, followed by a full investigation into the extortion claims.
He strongly condemned the conduct, stating that extortion, illegal collection of money, and any form of misconduct by police officers will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
The Commissioner also assured that the investigation will be thorough, transparent, and impartial, adding that any officer found guilty will face disciplinary action in line with the law and the Nigeria Police Act.
The command further urged members of the public to continue reporting cases of police misconduct through official channels, reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, integrity, and accountability within the force.
