Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote, has made plans to donate one-third of his wealth to charitable causes, a decision his daughter, Halima Dangote, says reflects his lifelong commitment to giving back to society.
Halima, who serves as a trustee of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, disclosed the development during an interview with Bloomberg, revealing that the billionaire businessman has already secured the support of his family for the landmark philanthropic initiative.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Dangote's net worth is currently estimated at $35.1 billion, meaning one-third of his fortune would amount to approximately $11.7 billion if his wealth remains at its present value.
Explaining the motivation behind the decision, Halima said philanthropy has always been at the heart of her father's vision and legacy. She noted that he has deliberately built structures to ensure that charitable giving continues long after his lifetime, with a strong focus on improving healthcare and education across Africa.
She revealed that the billionaire has already transferred a significant portion of his wealth to the Aliko Dangote Foundation in line with Islamic inheritance principles. According to her, the decision reflects the Islamic concept that allows a person to dedicate up to one-third of their estate to charitable causes.
Halima added that her father believes the success of his business is closely tied to giving back to society, describing philanthropy as an essential part of the family's values and long-term mission. She also disclosed that Dangote formally announced his intention to donate 33 percent of his inheritance and requested that she, her two sisters, and his mother endorse the decision by signing the relevant legal documents.
The announcement further cements Dangote's reputation as one of the world's leading philanthropists. Earlier this year, TIME magazine included him in its inaugural TIME100 Philanthropy list, recognizing his humanitarian efforts through the Aliko Dangote Foundation, which reportedly spends more than ₦50 billion annually on health, education, poverty alleviation, and other development programmes across Africa.
The latest revelation underscores Dangote's determination to ensure that a substantial portion of his fortune continues to impact lives and support humanitarian causes for generations to come.
